EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Easthampton tenants are protesting against their landlord, Hurricane Properties LLC, over rent increases and property neglect.
The tenants, who reside at 17 Adams Street, held a press conference on Tuesday to voice their concerns about sharp rent hikes and alleged neglect by the out-of-state landlord.
They claim that communication with Hurricane Properties has nearly stopped since the company deactivated its website.
“Because these folks aren’t local, any correspondence needs to go through the mail,” said Katie Talbot from Springfield No One Leaves, highlighting the difficulty in reaching the landlord.
Tenants have been frustrated by the lack of response from Hurricane Properties LLC, which is based out of state. They have taken their demands to Beacon Hill in Boston, advocating for rent control and stronger tenant protections as a bill sits in the Senate. That bill is called S-1447, an act enabling cities and towns to stabilize rents and protect tenants.
Ilene Roizman, an Adams Street tenant, expressed frustration over the property manager being located in Florida, making it difficult for tenants to address their concerns directly. “If they were local, we would pay a visit to their office and talk to them,” she said.
