Humans are generally not good at being proactive, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try! ETU has multiple documented instances of rents going up in our community as a direct result of their landlord’s fear of rent control passing. And as the summer rolls around and leases turn over, we’re expecting to see this trend continue. ANTI-ICE TRAININGS, coming to a city near you! HOW TO FIGHT A RENT HIKE! Some exciting things happening in Easthampton! While we are continuing to fight to keep our neighbors housed, we are lucky to have the support and partnership of members of the city council. This week the council will be voting to adopt a resolution to form a Housing Crisis Task Force, a representative working group to identify and address housing challenges faced by residents. This is a fantastic opportunity to show up and provide support for this resolution! A quick resource shared with us by Ryan Griffin of the Easthampton Health department. MA has one of the strongest sanitary codes in the country, and you have the protected right to both bring maintenance concerns to your landlord, or request a board of health inspection, free of retaliation from the landlord. Amy Mares, a tenant of Hurricane Properties LLC reads a statement from Don Chevannes, a tenant of Pine Valley Realty, during ETU’s press conference addressing Pine Valley’s unwillingness to negotiate in their insane rent increases.
